Molecular Biology — September 1999

Affymetrix, Inc. has acquired Genetic MicroSystems, Inc. a privately-held instrumentation company specializing in DNA array technology. GMS manufactures and markets exportable instruments for both fabricating and analyzing DNA arrays for use in life science research and development applications. GMS together with its distributor network has placed more than 150 array makers and scanners at academic, biotechnology and pharmaceutical customer sites worldwide. Affymetrix intends to offer the GMS product line as a complement to its GeneChip platform for researchers who want the flexibility to make low-volumes of microarrays using both known and unknown genes.

In other news, Affymetrix, Inc. has launched its GeneChip HuSNP Mapping Assay, containing oligonucleotides of known sequence enabling simultaneous interrogation of nearly 1500 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) covering all 22 autosomes and the X chromosome in a single experiment. Affymetrix collaborated with the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research to discover many of the SNPs represented in this mapping assay.

Genometrix Inc. has renewed its research agreement with Motorola Inc., established in December 1998. Motorola has bought an undisclosed amount of Genometrix preferred securities and obtained a license from Genometrix to procure certain fundamental DNA chip intellectual property for the commercialization of portable DNA-based analysis systems. In addition, the research agreement involves the application of proprietary Genometrix technologies to the Motorola biochip platform.

Hewlett-Packard Company has introduced the HP 2100 bioanalyzer for the integrated analysis of nucleic acids. This is the first commercially available product using Caliper Technologies' LabChip technology. In this "lab-on-a-chip," all sample preparation, fluid handling and biochemical analysis steps will be carried out within the confines of a microchip and uses various LabChip kits. The system is designed for use by molecular biologists and biochemists working with PCR products, restriction enzyme digests or RNA preparations. The price of the complete system is $18,800.
