Information Technology and Healthcare — January 2000

Biomerica is developing the ReadyScript, a point-of-care medication management system, which will allow physicians to generate and electronically send prescriptions via the Internet to retail, mail order and Internet pharmacies. The ReadyScript system will allow for complete automation of the prescription writing, dispensing and fulfillment process. The product is being designed to run on both desktop and handheld computers. Biomerica also markets EZ Detect a home Fecal Occult Blood Test that requires no laboratory processing and no diet restrictions.

Cyber-Care Inc. has launched an interactive videoconferencing device that allows health care professionals to check up on chronically ill patients at home via the Internet. The Electric House Call (EHC) System measures a patient's weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, heartbeat, and blood glucose, and displays readings to a nurse or caregiver via the Internet. A patient can use the system to locate a health professional and make the connection. There is no cost to the patient.

Dynamic Healthcare Technologies has launched its e-Premier Laboratory Information System (LIS), a web-enabled version of its Premier Series LIS. e-Premier enables laboratory and clinical staff, both inside and outside the hospital, to use the LIS over the Internet/Intranet, extending the reach of the laboratory to remote hospitals, outreach service locations, reference labs, physician offices and homes. Referring physicians and clinicians using any Internet-connected device can have secure access to enter laboratory orders and review patients' laboratory test results. The company will use the Internet to handle connectivity to, and communication with, laboratory instruments as well as to facilitate interfaces to customers' other information systems.

Quest Diagnostics and Caresoft Incorporated have entered into an agreement that will provide consumers with secure on-line access to their clinical laboratory test results through Caresoft's consumer web site, TheDailyApple.com. Consumers will be able to log on to TheDailyApple.com, securely access test results for many of the routine clinical lab tests performed by Quest Diagnostics and download the data into a personalized health record. The results of tests for certain complex diseases, such as HIV, will not be electronically available and may only be obtained from a patient's physician. All test results will be available to consumers only after they have first been made available to the physician. The service will also provide background information about the test, such as generally-accepted normal range limits for each test and descriptions of how tests are used by physicians in managing their patients' health.
