Molecular Biology — September 2000

Boston Biomedica, Inc. has been awarded a US Patent for devices used in the extraction of nucleic acids from cells using Pressure Cycling Technology (PCT). These devices will make it possible to couple PCT extraction with adsorption-based technology for nucleic acid purification and concentration.

Caliper Technologies Corp. has introduced Automated Microfluidics System 90, a new LabChip system to perform automated nucleic acid separation and analysis. The instrument automates the sizing, concentration and purity analysis of nucleic acid fragments using only nanoliters of sample. It is designed to provide an automated solution for high volume nucleic acid fragment analysis in microarray and cloning laboratories. Caliper is commercializing the system through a technology access program and plans to begin delivering instruments and LabChip kits to customers by the end of 2000. The complete system includes the instrument and LabChip kits that contains all required reagents and chips to perform the experiment. Each kit is capable of handling several thousand samples.

Genomics Collaborative Inc. and PolyGenyx have begun a study, which focuses on a rapid method for discovering correlations between genetic variation and coronary artery disease risk. The study will determine SNPs within haplotypes of genes relevant to the disease.

Celera Genomics has launched its single nucleotide polymorphism database for the human genome, listing more than 2.8 million unique SNPs made up of a combination of its own research and 400,000 non-overlapping, unique SNPs screened from the public databases. As part of the agreement, Celera has entered into a licensing agreement with the University Of Wales College Of Medicine, Institute Of Medical Genetics at Cardiff. After a period of exclusivity, the database will be made publicly available through the existing Cardiff web site.

Corning Inc. has developed a high-volume process to manufacture microarrays. The company expects full commercial production in the first quarter of 2001. Corning reports the process will enable it to make one DNA microarray a minute. The new manufacturing process combines process technologies used to make other Corning products, including an extrusion process used to make cellular substrates, a glass redraw process used to manufacture hair-thin strands of optical fiber, and a micro-printing process used to apply decorative patterns to consumer cookware. Corning's microarrays are currently undergoing beta testing at laboratories in the U.S. and Europe.

Genomic Solutions Inc. has launched its GeneMAP Cancer Array that consists of 1,152 human genes. GeneMap is one component of the larger, fully integrated Genetac Biochip system that Provides gene expression analysis, DNA library management, microarray production, hybridization, microarray imaging, microarray analysis and results reporting.

Mycota Biosciences, Inc. has completed the identification of all the essential genes of Candida albicans. The company believes this opens the door to a new generation of antifungal testing and drug discovery.
