Information Technology and Healthcare — March 2000

APACHE Medical Systems, Inc. has introduced the APACHE CV (Cardiovascular) Risk Predictor to 250-plus members of Congress, their staff and guests, at an "invitation-only" Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee event, demonstrating to Congress how APACHE technology, coupled with the world wide web may help individual physicians access an expert database, and thereby objectively measure patient risk and assess likely outcomes before a decision is made to perform angioplasty, bypass surgery or valve replacement surgery.

Baxter International Inc. is collaborating with Microsoft and Cisco Systems to develop a web-enabled renal dialysis products and clinical software systems. The partners are developing the Internet connectivity and software applications necessary to implement the Renal E-Health Initiative, which will allow patients and clinicians to interact via the Web. Baxter plans to launch similar initiatives for web-enabling medical devices and connecting patient and clinicians via the Internet in several businesses. In February 2000, Baxter launched kidneydirections.com, an interactive patient-education web site dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of kidney disease.

This month saw the official launch of the Connectivity Industry Consortium, or CIC, the 32-member, industry-funded group is composed of device manufacturers, information-system companies and healthcare providers. The CIC's mandate is to develop and implement standards to enable seamless information exchange between point-of-care systems and healthcare information systems. CIC members have agreed to integrate the standards into products currently being developed. Core industry members include Agilent Laboratories, AVL Scientific Corp., Bayer Diagnostics, Instrumentation Laboratory, Johnson & Johnson, Lifescan Inc., Medical Automation Systems, Radiometer Medical A/S, Roche Diagnostics and Sunquest Information Systems.

e-MEDx Inc. and Control Diabetes, Inc. have agreed to co-develop e-SelfCare for Diabetes, a patient self-empowerment site for individuals with diabetes. The site provides a web-based interactive communication tool for diabetics, their primary care physicians and diabetes care specialists to work together for better control of blood glucose levels.

ican, INC. has launched icanPREVENT, a knowledge web site for health care providers, infection control professionals and others concerned about controlling the transmission of infectious diseases in health care settings. The site provides news on nosocomial and infectious diseases, infection control measures, expert information on infection control-related medical products, plus textbooks not previously available on-line. Additional content and functionality, including training tools and interactive forums for infection control professionals, will be added to the site by mid-summer 2000.
