Molecular Biology — December 2000

DNA Sciences has entered into an agreement to acquire PPGx, Inc., a pharmacogenomics products and services company. PPGx was originally formed as a joint venture in February 1999 between PPD and Axys. The new company will market DNA-based clinical tests that will help to manage the diagnosis and treatment of common diseases more effectively.

Rosetta Inpharmatics has launched the GEML Community, comprised of leaders in the field of genomics who develop, support, and employ the Gene Expression Markup Language (GEML) format for exchange of gene expression and proteomics data, and annotation. The GEML (Gene Expression Markup Language) file format facilitates the interchange of data and annotation from DNA microarray and other gene expression technologies. www.geml.org.

Motorola has signed development agreement with Compugen Ltd. to market DNA microchips. Compugen will contribute its proprietary DNA chip-design tools and its LEADS platform - an algorithm-based technology that analyzes genomic and protein-sequence data.

Nanogen, Inc. and KnowledGENE.com, Inc. are co-developing multiplexed genetic tests using Nanogen's NanoChip Molecular Biology Workstation. KnowledGENE.com is an internet-based company providing genetics services to public and medical communities, including diagnostic testing for genetic diseases and genetic counseling.

PerkinElmer Life Sciences, has licensed its TSA (Tyramide Signal Amplification) technology non-exclusively to Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. for development and use on its automated immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization slide-staining systems for clinical and research uses. TSA is PerkinElmer's proprietary signal amplification technology.

Third Wave Technologies, Inc. and Dade Behring Inc. have entered into a nonexclusive, royalty-bearing cross-licensing arrangement that will give Dade Behring the right to develop new in vitro diagnostics products to diagnose genetic blood clotting disorders and detect drug-resistant infectious disease organisms based on Third Wave's Invader patents and give Third Wave freedom to operate under certain Dade Behring patents.
