Healthcare in Canada - August 1998

Fresenius Canada Dialysis , Inc., an affiliate of Fresenius Medical Care Canada, has entered into a long-term management agreement with Ottawa-Carleton Dialysis Services and Eastern Ontario Dialysis Services to design, build, supply and operate freestanding dialysis clinics. The OCDS center will be equipped with 16 dialysis stations and initially serve 42 patients from the Ottawa region. The EODS facility will be equipped with six stations and initially provide treatment for 21 patients from the Cornwall area. Both facilities will be under the medical direction of Gerald Posen, MD, a nephrologist at the Ottawa Hospital, and are scheduled to begin operating in November 1998.

The Health Services Restructuring Commission (HSRC) today issued directions for University Avenue hospitals to co-ordinate and consolidate their services. The directions, which build on a plan the hospitals prepared, foresee the transfer of a number of programs between Mount Sinai Hospital and The Toronto Hospital. Obstetrics and gynecology services will be consolidated at Mount Sinai. A $15 million capital improvement is recommended to expand birthing facilities, bassinets and ambulatory space at Mount Sinai Hospital. Mount Sinai Hospital will transfer thoracic surgery and retinal surgery to The Toronto Hospital.

The HSRC directions also call for all University Avenue hospitals to increase service co-ordination. For instance, The Toronto Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital will create a single women's health program along with the University of Toronto.

The University Avenue hospitals, including the Toronto Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, The Hospital for Sick Children and the Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto (which will soon merge with Lyndhurst Hospital and The Toronto Rehabilitation Centre), will continue to work to consolidate support services. These include joint purchasing, information systems, laboratory services, nutrition, pharmacy services and facilities management.

Newbridge Networks will install the high-performance Newbridge VIVID Switched Routing system at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. The networking solution will enable St. Paul's to provide healthcare services to the six other healthcare facilities that comprise the Providence Health Care consortium. By seamlessly linking Providence Health Care's communications facilities into a single entity, the network enables physicians and other healthcare workers located in various facilities to instantaneously access and share a wide range of information, including detailed electronic medical records, regardless of the time of day. Other applications made possible by the Newbridge solution include: telemedicine; on-line training of healthcare personnel; the conversion of lab manuals and other documentation into web pages for healthcare employees; and convenient, transportable patient records, which eliminate the need for individuals to complete new forms each time they visit a different facility.

The Board of Directors for the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) has targeted Monday, September 28, 1998, as the date it will assume responsibility for operating Canada's blood supply system from the Canadian Red Cross Society. Hema-Quebec, which will operate the blood supply system in Quebec, will also be launched on that date. date it will assume responsibility for operating Canada's blood supply system from the Canadian Red Cross Society.
