Research News for March 2001Researchers at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, have discovered biomarkers of bladder cancer that signify premalignant changes well before a pathological diagnosis of cancer is possible. They have evaluated DNA ploidy, the bladder tumor-associated antigen p300, and the cytoskeletal protein G-actin in urothelial cells from voided urine samples. The biomarkers were measured by quantitative fluorescence image analysis of urine sediment cells. According to their report, it will be 15 to 20 years before DNA microarray technology will be practical for cancer detection. In contrast, quantitative fluorescence image analysis could be readily available in a relatively short period of time. University of Michigan researchers have developed a Raman spectroscopy technique to detect microcracks that predict more accurately when bones may be about to break. Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive technique that uses laser light. Scientists at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have developed a new blood test for Lyme disease that may provide a more accurate method for detecting the tick-borne illness, particularly in its early stages when current tests may not yield an accurate diagnosis. The test detects a OspA, an antigen, that stimulates an immune response, and is produced specifically by Borrelia burgdorferi, the microorganism that causes Lyme disease.
