According to projections prepared by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), spending on Canada's health care system is expected to reach $86 billion in 1999, an increase of 5.1% from the $81.8 billion projected for 1998. The projections are from CIHI's latest report, National Health Expenditure Trends (1975-1999), which provides an overview of health care spending trends from 1975 to 1997 and projections for 1998 and 1999. The average annual rate of growth of total health care spending declined from 11.1% of GNP between 1975 and 1991, to 2.6% between 1991 and 1996. Total health care spending per person in Canada was an estimated $2,598 in 1997 and is expected to reach $2,700 in 1998 and $2,815 in 1999. Among the provinces, spending per person was highest in Ontario and British Columbia in 1997, at $2,746 and $2,728, respectively. The lowest expenditures per capita are projected to be in Prince Edward Island ($2,536) and Quebec ($2,453). An executive summary and related figures and tables are available from CIHI's website: www.cihi.ca.
The cost of health services across Canada is the subject of the National Cost List Project. Coordinated by the Institute of Health Economics in Alberta, the study will develop a list of standard costs for health care services that can be used in economic and population studies. The project is being funded by Canada's Research-based Pharmaceutical Companies, and is expected to be complete by April 2000.
The project will provide standardized costs for:
- Inpatient Services: acute; oncology; psychiatric; rehabilitation; episodic; ongoing.
- Outpatient Services: clinics; day surgery; emergency departments
- Home Care
- Physicians Costs
- Diagnostics and Therapeutics: laboratory, radiology; physiotherapy; speech; occupational therapy.
- Public Health
- Social Services
- Continuing Care
Ontario Energy, Science and Technology Minister Jim Wilson has announced that the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund, University Health Network and corporate sponsors are investing more than $18.5 million to develop innovative screening technologies and treatments for genetic diseases. Researchers will use biochips supplied by the Ontario Cancer Institute to analyze genetic information. In time they will design their own biochips for their research needs. Over a ten-year period, the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund will invest $500 million in collaborative research involving research institutions and the private sector.
