An article in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is a strong predictor of the risk of cardiovascular events among the 636 patients studied. A clinical trial sponsored by Merck & Co. Inc. and Schering-Plough Corp. has shown that sitosterol is a member of a group of chemicals that scientists believe pose a possible risk for coronary heart disease. Sitosterol is similar to cholesterol and is absorbed from the intestine. The trial showed that even moderate levels of sitosterol in the bloodstream, in combination with high levels of LDL cholesterol were associated with nearly double the risk of a major heart problem than low amounts of sitosterol and high LDL.
