Using the Internet (www.diasensor.com) or a touchtone telephone, DataCONN allows subscribers to record glucose measurements in a secure, centralized database maintained by Diasensor.com. Both patients and physicians can access the information at the password- protected website. The charge to the patient for a full year's subscription is $59. DiseaseRef, Inc., an online medical information resource, is expanding to include Unbound Medicine's MedWeaver, a differential diagnosis tool that empowers physicians to make more informed decisions and improve clinical outcomes. The differential diagnosis component consists of more than 2,000 diseases, 4,500 findings (signs, symptoms, and laboratory tests), and 65,000 relationships. In addition to performing differential diagnosis, MedWeaver provides assisted literature searching and exploration of vetted Web sites. HealthSouth Corp. is planning to build a prototype fully digital hospital. Each bed will have its own Internet connection, letting physicians and nurses check and update patient records online. Written information and medical images will be stored electronically an accessible by a wireless portable computer network. HealthSouth chief executive Richard Scrushy estimates the total cost of the 219-bed hospital at between $100 million and $125 million. The LABWORKS product is scaleable from small labs to large multi-location enterprises. VelQuest Corporation, has introduced its ePMC (electronic Process Management and Compliance) platform that enables electronic data capture from human observations, instruments, and networked PCs replacing paper notebooks, batch records, and control sheets. VelQuest's ePMC solution acquires data electronically at its source; links the data to analytical test procedures, secures the data and provides a platform for a wide range of IT applications. Furthermore, the VelQuest ePMC solution provides a means to meet recent FDA regulations, specifically 21 CFR Part 11, governing the use of electronic records and signatures in regulated laboratories. The National Physicians DataSource (NPDS), publisher of The Little Blue Book of US physicians, has taken launched a Web portal that acts as a free messaging gateway between patients and their physicians. Since not every physician in the US is hooked to the Internet, NPDS has created a Web portal that allows e-mail to be generated to those practices and physicians who are online to the Net, and to generate a fax for those medical staff who are not online.
