Beckman Coulter, Inc. has signed a cross-licensing agreement with Specialty Laboratories, Inc. for the development of multi-analyte assays on Beckman Coulter's Progressive MicroArray platforms. The agreement provides Specialty Laboratories with access to Beckman Coulter's Universal Linker capture technology. In return, Beckman Coulter gains access to any multi-analyte assays Specialty Laboratories may develop as a result of this agreement. The first testing services resulting from the collaboration are expected to be offered by Specialty Laboratories as early as the end of 2002. BioMicro is alpha testing its Microarray User Interface (MAUI) hybridization system. MAUI allows for precise mixing of very low volume, highly concentrated solutions on the surface of a microarray. Molecular Diagnostics, Inc. has introduced its ASR In-Cell HPV probe for detecting E6 & E7 oncogenes. Nanogen, Inc. is collaborating with the Associated Regional and University Pathologists (ARUP) Laboratories to develop gene assays on the NanoChip Molecular Biology Workstations. Nanosphere Inc. has developed a nanoparticle-based DNA detection system that it claims is 10 times more sensitive and 100,000 times more specific than current genomic detection systems. The technology uses electrical conductivity measurements facilitated by gold nanoparticle probes. Orchid BioSciences, Inc. and Thermo Electron Corporation are collaborating to develop and market genotyping products for research and SNP-based point-of-care diagnostic tests. Orchid BioSciences, Inc. has provided Beckman Coulter, Inc. a license option for its SNP-IT primer extension technology for molecular diagnostic SNP applications on multiple platforms. Beckman Coulter also obtained a license to make and sell certain analyte specific reagents (ASRs) for use on these platforms including capillary electrophoresis systems, microarray plates and flow cytometers. PerkinElmer Life Sciences has introduced two new MICROMAX Microarray products - the Human Apoptosis (MPS606) and Human Neurobiology (MPS607) microarrays. TriPath Oncology, Inc. is collaborating with AmeriPath, Inc. to develop the clinical use of a novel gene expression assay for malignant melanoma.
