Healthcare in Canada - January 2001
Vaccine safety in Canada got a boost with the launch of the Canadian Alliance for Immunization Research and Epidemiology (CAIRE). CAIRE will support research into disease epidemiology, vaccine strategies, program support, and vaccine safety and effectiveness. Dynacare Inc. is set to purchase the laboratory operations and assets of Medical Arts Laboratory, Inc. and Southern Medical Arts Laboratory, Inc. These two labs filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in October of 2000. In 1991 Nova Scotia launched its Gynecological Cancer Screening Program to promote annual PAP smear testing. Now the province has introduced an outreach program using a portable examining table that fits easily into the back of a car. This means tests can be conducted outside physician's offices and hospitals. The three-year pilot program is funded by Health Canada, Pap tests are conducted in community health centers and other central locations by nurse practitioners. Ontario's Energy, Science and Technology minister Jim Wilson has announced that the Ontario government is investing more than $23 million in Ottawa-area projects through the Ontario Research Development Challenge Fund and the Ontario Innovation Trust. Of this amount, nearly $12 million will be invested in a stem cell and gene therapy project at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, University of Ottawa.
