The German Health Ministry has announced it is moving forward with plans to introduce a smart health card that would contain the medical history of patients. The card could be used by members of state-backed health insurance companies, and would include information such as what medicines, treatments and tests had been prescribed to patients. The Health Ministry is running a budget deficit and is looking for ways to cut costs. HomMed, has expanded the capabilities of its HomMed Home Monitoring System with the addition of a PT/INR peripheral, a device that measures blood clotting times. HomMed predicts the demand for in-home blood testing will soar as a result of the September 2001 announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that Medicare will soon begin paying for in-home testing of patients taking blood-thinning medication.
