Ambion RNA Diagnostics, a division of Ambion, Inc. has granted Celera Diagnostics non-exclusive worldwide rights to use its Armored RNA technology in products and processes for in vitro molecular diagnostics. Ambion and Cenetron Diagnostics jointly hold patents that cover RNA-containing, ribonuclease- resistant particles for use in various applications, including diagnostic tests. Custom reagents for Celera Diagnostics will be manufactured in Ambion's new contract manufacturing facility.

EraGen Biosciences, Inc. has received Fast Track funding from the National Institutes of Health to develop a rapid genetic test system for Cystic Fibrosis. EraGen will use its proprietary core technology, AEGIS, to design an automated screening system for CF to be sold to specialized testing laboratories such as State hygiene labs.

LGC Ltd., formerly Britain's Laboratory of the Government Chemist which was privatized in 1996, is developing a point-of-care system capable of analyzing DNA from saliva, blood or urine samples to give a result in 15 to 25 minutes. The company is working with Agile Technologies to build the device. The targeted price is $6,000.

The University of Leipzig is developing a breath test that can identify mutations of the p53 cancer-suppressing gene in patients with lung cancer.

Variagenics, Inc. is developing molecular diagnostic tests predictive of the response of solid tumors to chemotherapy. The first clinical study will involve genetic analysis of over 100 patients who have experienced severe side effects following 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy for colorectal cancer.

Craig Venter has launched a service to map a person's entire genetic code. For $621,500, a person would get details of their entire genetic code within 1 week. He is building a special facility and the service is will be available at the end of 2002.
