The National Association of Managed Care Physicians (NAMCP) has developed an electronic "report card" that allows patients to track measures of their diabetes health over time. The report card includes space for recording hemoglobin A1 levels, the presence of protein in urine samples, LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index and flu shots. Patients also may keep a log of their exercise activity. The association has also created an "audit tool" for physicians to assess the care they provide their diabetic patients. Future report cards may target asthma and congestive heart failure. Instrumentation Laboratory has launched its Intelligent Quality Management (iQM) system for use with the GEM Premier 3000 critical care analyzer. iQM is an automated Quality Assurance system which replaces the use of conventional external quality control. It continuously monitors operation of the entire analytical process, including sensors, fluidics and electronics, following the same path that a patient sample travels. iQM automatically performs and documents corrective actions upon detection of any error. All manual processes associated with traditional quality control are eliminated. Inflexxion Inc. has introduced PREDICT CD-ROM a multimedia tool to help people decide about whether to undergo the BRCA1&2 genetic test for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer risk. Developed by Inflexxion, Inc. with support from the National Cancer Institute, PREDICT explains the benefits, risks and limitations of BRCA1&2 cancer genetic testing. It is customized to each individual user by asking them enter information about gender, cancer history, and known family history of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 alteration. A companion website (www.genetic-testing.com) answers questions about the program, provides ordering information and technical support for the CD-ROM, and offers news and research updates on cancer genetics. The PREDICT acronym stands for Predisposition Risk EDucation and Information about Cancer Testing.
