Affymetrix, Inc. and Arcturus Bioscience Inc. have entered into a collaboration to develop new tools that will enable researchers to conduct gene expression analysis on paraffin-embedded clinical biopsy samples. The device combines Arcturus' Paradise reagents to extract and amplify RNA from paraffin-embedded tissues which will be tested with a new custom microarray, the GeneChip Human Genome X3P Array, which will be offered through the Affymetrix Made-to-Order Program to any researcher interested in examining paraffin-embedded samples for gene expression. Cancer Genetics, Inc. has launched a new DNA FISH assay to help diagnose and monitor therapy of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and a subset of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This assay uses a BCR/ABL four color fluorescent in situ hybridization probe to simultaneously detect the t(9;22)(q34.1;q11.2) translocations, associated deletions, variants, and amplifications which occur in CML. ChromaVision Medical Systems, Inc. has received FDA clearance to market its ACIS digital microscope system as a complement to the DakoCytomation HercepTest in the detection and measurement of Her2/neu (c-erbB-2). Large Scale Biology Corporation's wholly-owned subsidiary, Eclipse Diagnostics, Inc. is developing the BAMF Technology, a pattern recognition discovery platform that detects biomarkers in blood for the diagnosis of cancer. QIAGEN GmbH and artus GmbH have entered into a manufacturing and supply agreement whereby artus will integrate QIAGEN's nucleic acid sample preparation products in its diagnostic systems for use in the detection of a variety of infectious diseases such as SARS, Herpes simplex virus -1/-2, EBV, West Nile Virus, Malaria, Salmonella. The tests will incorporate specific versions of QIAGEN's sample preparation modules and technologies, and will be distributed by artus under the brand PureArt. Roche Diagnostics launched its new Factor V Leiden Kit and Factor II (Prothrombin) G20210A Kit for its LightCycler PCR instrument. Roche has also acquired a non-exclusive license to Innogenetics' N.V. intellectual property for HCV genotyping. Tm Bioscience Corporation is collaborating with Calgary Laboratory Services to develop a genetic test for the identification and characterization of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
