Molecular Biology — January 2004

Affymetrix, Inc. and Caliper Life Sciences have entered into a collaboration and supply agreement to develop and provide automated target preparation instruments for the GeneChip Probe Array system, the new High Throughput Array (HTA) system and future GeneChip platforms. The new products leverage Caliper's expertise in high-throughput automation and microfluidics with Affymetrix' expertise in microarray technology and applications.

Applied Imaging Corp. has received FDA clearance to market its Ariol HerSight application used in conjunction with the DAKO HercepTest.

CombiMatrix has launched its microarray for the detection of H5N1 "Bird Flu" influenza A virus. The microarray allows for the identification of the H5N1 virus, and also allows the tracking of mutations that can occur in its genetic makeup as it goes through patterns of bird and human infection.

Dade Behring has acquired the exclusive worldwide in vitro diagnostic rights for the inventions of Aventis Behring that relate to the factor VII activating protease (FSAP) and mutant forms of FSAP. One recently-described mutant (Marburg I) of FSAP has shown promise as a significant and independent risk predictor for the progression of carotid stenosis.

Genomic Health has developed a breast cancer gene panel that includes genes related to the estrogen receptor, HER2, proliferation and invasion and several other important categories. The panel was used in the NSABP trial that showed that using multiple genes is more powerful than using single genes and will provide more consistent and reliable information for physicians and patients. Genomic Health plans to make its assay available in early 2004 as a clinical laboratory service under the name OncotypeDX.

Nanogen, Inc. has introduced a molecular diagnostic tool for Alzheimer's disease. The test is based on the company's NanoChip Molecular Biology Workstation and analyte specific reagents to detect the specific genetic form, or allele, of the ApoE gene. Nanogen licensed the detection of ApoE alleles for use with the NanoChip device in April 2003.

Perlegen Sciences, Inc. and Galileo Genomics Inc. have formed a collaboration to develop a Quebec Linkage Disequilibrium Map (QLDM) consisting of approximately 40,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) chosen to represent the specific patterns of linkage disequilibrium (genetic sharing) in the Quebec Founder Population. The companies will use the QLDM to conduct genome wide scans on DNA samples from individuals collected by Galileo, using haplotype sharing, in 21 common diseases. The objective is the discovery of GeneMaps, groups of common interacting genes that are directly and unequivocally involved in disease- causing biochemical processes.

Prodesse, Inc. has introduced its Pneumoplex Real Time assay in real time PCR format. The test is used to detect simultaneously the three most common bacterial causes of atypical pneumonia (mycoplasma, chlamydia and legionella).

Roche Diagnostics has entered into a license agreement for the use of Incyte Corp.'s Eberwine Linear RNA Amplification technology. Roche expects to use the technology in its development of diagnostics that identify gene expression patterns unique to particular diseases or disease subtypes.

Xtrana, Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to sell all of its intellectual property for $4,000,000. These assets include all of Xtrana's intellectual property assets, excluding Xtrana's trademarks and trade names.
