Molecular Biology — Summer 2004

Summer is over and its back to work. It has been a very busy summer, news-wise. We have chosen to present some of the more innovative news items. We are back to our monthly update schedule, so feel free to visit regularly.

Affymetrix, Inc. and ParAllele BioScience announced that scientists at Cambridge University will use GeneChip Tag Arrays and MegAllele genotyping reagents in a genetic study of type 1 diabetes.

Applied Imaging Corp. released the Ariol 2.0 imaging analysis system that combines screening for genetic abnormalities and protein expression in a single instrumentation platform. The system is released for research use pending application to the FDA for full clearance of the applications for routine clinical use.

Genteon Inc. has developed the patented Dynamic Fluorescence molecular detection and the Capella 400 instrument. The method eliminates dye labels, ddNTPs and expensive polymerases. Dynamic Fluorescence detection eliminates the use of fluorescent labeled primers or terminators. The Capella 400 is an automated capillary electrophoresis system.

LightUp Technologies AB and DakoCytomation A/S entered into a distribution agreement for LightUp Technologies' molecular infectious disease diagnostic tests. DakoCytomation acquired co-exclusive rights to market and sell LightUp's products in Europe.

MWG Biotech AG acquired world-wide distribution rights for artus GmbH's ExpressArt line of mRNA amplification kits (excluding Great Britain, Japan and Switzerland). Kits for the amplification of bacterial mRNA, for severely degraded RNAs from difficult samples, and from paraffin-embedded tissues will be launched before the end of 2004. ExpressArt products are compatible with all microarray platforms.

Nanosphere has developed Verigene platform into a field-deployable system that enables emergency first responders and hospital triage personnel to identify biological toxins, such as ricin and botulinium toxin. The company is now extending the application of this technology to the identification of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Nanosphere will integrate DNA barcode technology and automated microfluidic assay processing into its platform with a colorimetric detection capability that will further simplify the identification of targets with a green-to-orange color change without the need for traditional signal or target amplification.

Third Wave Technologies Inc. and 3M entered into a supply agreement that will provide Third Wave customers with the option of combining Invader technology with 3M's microfluidic technology. This new platform option will enable clinical laboratories to forgo the numerous liquid-handling steps.

TriPath Imaging, Inc. released two RUO molecular diagnostic products for cancer of the cervix and breast. The SurePath ImmunoCytoChemical test is being developed to aid in the identification of high-grade cervical disease. SureDetect breast markers are being developed to assist in determining the choice of therapy and in assessing the risk of early relapse, recurrence, and poor clinical outcome in patients suffering from early stage cancer of the breast.

Velcura Therapeutics, Inc. is developing a custom Affymetrix GeneChip array that aids the development of bone disease therapies by enabling researchers to follow global changes in gene expression during human bone formation. The array is available only to Velcura Therapeutics for use within the company for its own studies or that of its strategic partners.

ViroLogic, Inc., is merging with ACLARA BioSciences, Inc. The combined company will leverage ViroLogic's commercial laboratory, patient testing and pharmaceutical drug development business with ACLARA's eTag System. The goal is to commercialize molecular diagnostics for personalized medicine focused on oncology and infectious diseases.
