Abbott Molecular has obtained a non-exclusive, worldwide license to a number of Affymetrix patents that will allow it to manufacture and sell comparative genomic hybridization microarrays, related readers and software in the research and diagnostics field. ExonHit Therapeutics and bioMérieux are developing a blood test for breast cancer based on ExonHit’s expertise in identifying specific genetic signatures from alternative RNA splicing associated with diseases. ChondroGene Limited formed a partnership with Kaiser Permanente to conduct a prospective clinical study to evaluate and optimize ChondroGene's ColonSentry blood-based colon cancer test on selected patient groups. Correlagen Diagnostics and Protedyne Corporation developed Correlagen GeneXchange that combines Correlagen genetic sequence testing methods and software with Protedyne's novel Radius robotic system. The system is designed for diagnostic laboratories. Digene Corporation and Asuragen, Inc., formerly a division of Ambion, Inc. have entered into an exclusive, worldwide agreement for the marketing and distribution of Asuragen's cystic fibrosis screening products. eGene Inc. is looking for global business partners in the DNA sample collection in airport terminals. The company was awarded a U.S. patent (6,645,718) titled, "DNA sample collection for identification." The patent describes a process of collecting DNA samples for identification purposes in the event of a cataclysmic accident. Passengers can choose to temporarily store their DNA samples at an airport terminal for specific flights. Gen-Probe Incorporated has exercised its option to develop a POC nucleic acid testing platform based on Qualigen's patented, FDA-approved FastPack immunoassay system platform, known as a closed unit-dose assay (CUDA) system. Micronics, Inc. was awarded a Phase I grant under the National Cancer Institute's Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop a point-of-care diagnostic system for early detection of colon cancer using Micronics' microfluidics-enabled flow cytometry platform in combination with molecular assays developed by Dr. William Grady at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Molecular Devices Corporation acquired the Laser Capture Microdissection (LCM) related business of Arcturus Bioscience for $10 million in cash. LCM expands Molecular Devices' life sciences product portfolio to include complete systems and reagents for sample preparation technology for genomic and protein analysis. Nanogen, Inc. acquired the realtime PCR business of Amplimedical S.p.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of Amplifon in a transaction of 8.1 million Euros consisting of 2.0 million Euros in cash and 6.1 million Euros in a promissory note convertible into Nanogen common shares. Amplimedical has been a distributor of Nanogen's NanoChip Molecular Biology Workstation and NanoChip 400 instrument systems in Italy. The Amplimedical diagnostics business will be merged with Nanogen's existing European operations to form Nanogen Advanced Diagnostics, S.r.L., which will become the focal point for Nanogen's operations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. Third Wave Technologies Inc. formed Third Wave Japan in a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corp. to accelerate the development and commercialization of clinical molecular diagnostic products and pharmacogenetics in Japan and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Products for hepatitis B and C viral load and genotyping, human papilloma virus, and mycobacterium are in development. Third Wave will have worldwide rights outside the Asia-Pacific region to any new technology or product developed by Third Wave Japan.
